IIT Bombay signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with its distinguished alumnus, Mr. Deepak M. Satwalekar (B. Tech – Hons, Mechanical Engineering, 1971), on March 10, 2022, for the establishment of a state-of-the-art Design and Making Lab at the Institute. Mr. Satwalekar has committed to donate a generous amount for the setting up of the lab that will provide hands-on training to first-year engineering students with the best-in-class machinery, thereby unlocking new and immersive ways of learning.?

The lab will be named after Mr. Satwalekar and his wife, Mrs. Maya Satwalekar, to acknowledge their philanthropic donation and will be located on the first floor of the Pre-Engineered Transit Building on campus. The lab will allow students to gain access to top-of-the-class equipment for mechanical and electronic work including 3D printers, laser cutters, the latest workstations with CAD (Computer-aided Design software), and a complete electronics setup.
