The Director of IIT Bombay Prof. Shireesh Kedare inaugurated a two-day Conclave on the ‘Future of Libraries’ and All IIT Librarians Meet 2024 on 25th October 2024. Prof. KVK Rao, Deputy Director (Finance, Infrastructure, and Administration); Prof. Irishi N. N. Namboothiri, Convenor of the Library Committee; Prof. Nand Kishore, Dean (Administrative Affairs); Mr. Ganesh Bhorkade, Registrar; Library Committee members, faculty, and guests were present. Dr. Manju Naika, Chief Library Officer and organizing secretary welcomed the guests. Librarians from across the country attended the Conclave.

In his inaugural address, Prof. Kedare emphasized the transformative changes in library services and the importance of making knowledge accessible. He shared his personal connection to libraries, highlighting their potential as dynamic collaborative spaces for students. He encouraged librarians to foster environments that inspire curiosity and engagement.

Prof. Rao discussed the role of libraries in the digital age. He prompted a critical evaluation of the necessity of physical libraries versus virtual resources and underscored the importance of libraries in research dissemination. He raised concerns about India's approach to open access and the financial sustainability of library services.

Prof. Namboothiri spoke on the future of library systems. He stressed the importance of redesigning library infrastructure and fostering reading habits. He advocated for integrating advanced technologies like AI and virtual reality to enhance library services and called for greater support from institutions.

Prof. Nand Kishore shared insights on the future of education and library evolution. He highlighted the importance of learning consistency across languages and proposed innovative translation services to enhance resource accessibility. He urged institutions to improve library services to serve students’ needs better.

Mr. Bhorkade discussed his experiences with various state-of-the-art libraries, emphasizing the significance of robust collections and green library concepts. He commended the library's transformation into a leading learning space on campus.

In his remarks, Dr. Naika highlighted the alignment of the conclave with International Open Access Week, emphasizing libraries' vital role in educational, research, and cultural development. He discussed the challenges posed by rapidly evolving technology and user behaviour, particularly in the post-COVID landscape, noting increased foot traffic in libraries. The Conclave aimed to explore how libraries can adapt to contemporary demands and remain essential institutions for societal progress.

The event featured a diverse program, including 13 speakers addressing critical topics. Day one comprised nine talks, while day two included three presentations and six-panel discussions. Engaging activities like an online quiz and a roadmap development session were organized to encourage participant interaction and knowledge sharing.

The Conclave served as a vital platform for dialogue on the future of libraries, fostering innovation in information systems and addressing the essential intersection of research and accessibility. Shri L. P. Engole, Assistant Librarian, delivered the vote of thanks, effectively concluding the event, which was followed by a delightful high tea. Ms. Vrushali Sansare anchored the proceedings, ensuring a smooth and engaging experience for all participants.

Overall, the event marked a significant step forward in addressing the challenges and opportunities libraries face in the digital age, fostering collaboration and innovation among IIT librarians.
