Materials Science engineers are concerned with the properties of matter and its applications to various areas of science and engineering. The Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, IIT Bombay offers following degree programs:

Under-Graduate

B.Tech

The Department offers a 4 year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programme for its students. This programme curriculum undergoes periodic reviews, upgrades and changes, bearing in mind the rapidly changing industry demands. The programme is meant to largely cater to the latest demands of the industry by imparting cutting edge knowledge and providing valuable industrial experience to its students.

Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech)

The Department offers a 5 year Dual Degree programme to its students. Under this programme, a student gets a Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) directly at the end of 5 years , when the student has to do research work for last 1.5 years along with the mandatory course requirements.?A Dual Degree student ?has to compulsorily complete an 'Honours' programme in the Department. Thus, at the end of 5 years, a student will get a B.Tech with Honours, with M.Tech in one of the following two subjects.

1. B.Tech with M.Tech in Ceramics and Composites
2. B.Tech with M.Tech in Metallurgical Process Engineering

The Dual Degree programme is meant to equip the students thoroughly in their core subject,so that they are capable enough to tackle any industry related problem or otherwise which pertains to their subject. As such, the Department's Dual Degree programme is very popular with the industry.

Post-Graduate

The Department offers two years Masters programme in following four specializations:

  1. M.Tech in Materials Science
  2. M.Tech in Steel Technology
  3. M.Tech in Process Engineering
  4. M.Tech in Corrosion Science

Doctorate (PhD)

The Department offers Doctorate (PhD) programme in frontier research areas of Material Science.
